Beginner’s Guide to Meditation

You’ve probably already heard about meditation before. Meditation can be defined as a practice where an individual uses a technique, such as focusing their mind on a particular object, thought or activity, to achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm state (Wikipedia).  It is said that the average CEO meditates for at least 20 minutes every single day.  But how can someone without any prior experience with meditation start meditating?

A basic strategy

Some people say that your goal should be to “empty your mind” of any thought or emotion. Truth be told, it’s extremely hard to pause your thoughts and reach a zen-like state of mind (someone rarely controls everything that goes through his/her mind).  Instead of trying something like that which will definitely frustrate you, you should focus all of your thoughts into 1 basic action; breathing. Breath in deeply, breath out slowly and repeat while focusing every part of your brain into it. It’s so much easier to focus on 1 thing than to erase everything completely. This way you will also improve your ability to stay focused while doing other activities (which really boosts your productivity).

It sounds easy, but don’t expect to reach a monks level overnight. They devote their entire life specifically to this action, so we can’t really compare, however, it’s definitely possible to get similar results. If you find yourself thinking of something completely different, please don’t get frustrated. It happens to all of us. Instead, try to relax and start over. In other words, erase that thought. Close your eyes, seat in a quiet place and slowly get control of your mind. It just feels awesome afterward!
